In the case HP C7000 or c3000 enclosure, you might have noticed that HP Onboard administrator (Called as OA) is placed inside a Tray or Sleeve. This tray is called as HP Onboard Administrator Tray (OA tray) or OA Sleeve. In the case of C7000 enclosure, you will find this tray at the rear of enclosure where as in the case of C3000 enclosure, HP Onboard Administrator Tray will be residing at the front of the enclosure. For your better understanding, please check the image provided below.
As the Onboard administrator resides inside the OA Tray, OA does not get connected to the enclosure mid-plane directly. Instead, Onboard Administrator gets connected to the OA Tray and the OA Tray will be connected to the mid-plane of the C3000 or C7000 enclosure. In short, there is no direct connection between OA and enclosure mid-plane, it is through the Tray.
HP Onboard Administrator Tray (OA tray) contains electric circuitry (microcontroller) and it has different version of firmware. OA Tray firmware is part of the HP Onboard Administrator firmware and is not available as a separate downloadable file from HP.com. Whenever you update the OA firmware, it will also update the microcode on the OA tray microcontroller.
However, in rare instances it is noticed that OA tray firmware does not get updated when we update the OA firmware of the enclosure. In this case, we will need to manually update the firmware of Onboard Administrator Tray. In this article, you will learn how to do that.
To check the firmware version of OA tray, please login to the HP Onboard Administrator GUI window. You need to know the Onboard Administrator IP address and password to login to the OA GUI. Once you logged in, click on Rack Firmware, and then check under “Enclosure Component Firmware Information” section. It will list the firmware versions of OA Tray, OA LCD and Enclosure Fans etc. For your better understanding, please check the screenshot provided below.
As you can see from above provided screenshot, the latest version of OA Tray firmware available is 1.7 but the version which currently installed is 1.6. It means, when we updated the firmware of HP Onboard Administrator to 3.30, it did not update the firmware of the OA Tray. So now we have to manually update the OA Tray firmware. You can check HP customer advisory c01718799 or c01491657 for some issues and solutions related to Onboard Administrator Tray.
