Sony Notebook: Driver for Unknown Device ACPI SNY5001

     

Windows driver related issue is the common issue you face once you reinstall Windows 8, Windows 7 or Vista on your Sony Notebook. Today,  we will check one of the driver related issues you which makes people crazy.  Once you check in Windows device manager, you will find one device is listed as “Unknown device”

This Unknown device can be any device. So to find which device it is, we need to find the Hardware IDs of this Unknown Device. To find the Hardware Ids, Double click on “Unknown Device”, then click on “Details” tab, then select “Hardware Ids” from the drop down list.

Sony ACPI SNY5001 Driver for Windows

Here, I could find two Hardware Ids of this Unknown device is listed. These IDs are very helpful to find the right drivers for the “Unknown Device”. The Device IDs of this Unknown device are listed below:

ACPI\SNY5001
*SNY5001

Sometime the Hardware Ids can be slightly different, it can be one of the following Hardware Ids as well:

ACPI\SNY5001\4&ECFA67B&0
ACPI\SNY5001\4&3BB360A&0

The Hardware Id ACPI\SNY5001 is for Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver. This driver may also help the functionality of special buttons available on your Notebooks. Installing this driver on your Notebook will fix this driver issue. At first, you need to go to Driver download page of your Sony Notebook and check whether this driver is available as a separate file (It may be listed under “System Components” at driver download page).

If available, Click on the Download button and download the Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver to your Computer.

If you are an unlucky person like me, then you may not find the driver on Sony website, then you could download following drivers for each version of Windows.

Windows Vista Driver:

For Windows Vista based Notebooks, download the Sony driver from here. This link will take you to the Sony Download page and you could try downloading the driver. Please follow the installation instruction provided in the same page.

Windows 7 Driver:

For Windows 7 based Notebooks, download the Sony driver from here. This link will take you to the Sony Download page and you could try downloading the driver. Please follow the installation instruction provided in the same page.

If the driver installation is not working or if you receive an error message stating the driver is not compatible with your Notebook, then you will need to perform manual driver installation using Windows Device manager. Please scroll-down the page to find the ways to install it on your Notebook.

Windows 8 & 8.1 Driver:

For Windows 8 based Notebooks, download the Sony driver from here. This link will take you to the Sony Download page and you could try downloading the driver. Please follow the installation instruction provided in the same page.  Even though this driver is for Windows 7, it worked for Windows 8 as well.

If the installation is not working or if you receive an error message stating the driver is not compatible with your Notebook, then you will need to perform a manual driver installation using Windows Device manager. Please scroll-down the page to find the ways to install it on your Notebook.

Manual installation of Driver using Device Manager:

For many, the driver installation does not work.  You may receive an error message stating “ This update is not intended for use with your computer mode”. Now things becomes little more tricky and crazy!Sony Driver Install Error

First you need to download the driver on your computer and save it to a folder. Here, I downloaded Windows 7 based driver on my Notebook and saved to a folder (Download Links are already given).

Now we need to extract this driver. In order to extract it, we need to use some tools such as Universal Extractor. You could download this tiny utility from this link or direct download is available here. At the Universal Extractor website, click on UniExtract Installer (5.3 MB) link and download it on your computer.

Universal Extractor to extract Sony DriverOnce you download Universal Extractor, you need to install it. Double click on the downloaded Universal Extractor file to install it on your computer.

Just keep clicking Next button and Universal Extractor will be installed on your machine. Once you install Universal Extractor, go to the folder in which you have downloaded Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver to your Computer.  Now right-click on the downloaded driver and select the option “UniExtract Here”. Have a look at the screenshot, may be it can help you.

Now you will receive a message as shown below. Select the option “E_Wise Unpacker” and click OK.

Now it will start the extraction process. A Command-promt window will open and the extraction process will start. Please wait till the process is completed.

Once the extraction process is completed. You will find a lot of files inside the folder in which you have downloaded the Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver. Now open the folder TEMPEXEFOLDER.

Under the folder TEMPEXEFOLDER, you will find lots of folder. But we are interested in the .inf and .cat files which is shown over there. The file names are SFEP.inf, sfepx64.cat,  sfepx86.cat.  This .inf file is for SNY5001 and will work for Windows 7, Windows 8  and Windows 8.1.

Now you need to open Device Manager again. Then right click on the “Unknown Device”, then select “Update Driver Software” option.

Now select the option “Browse my computer for driver software”.

Now click on “Broswe” button and browse to the TEMPEXEFOLDER folder. In my case, the path is C:\Sony Driver\TEMPEXEFOLDER. Ensure that you point to the TEMPEXEFOLDER folder because it is where SFEP.inf, sfepx64.cat,  sfepx86.cat files are stored.

Now continue the installation of Driver, I hope it will install the driver on your computer and will fix this annoying issue. This steps worked for me.

If above method does not work, then choose the option “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer” and select “Have Disk” option, then click on “Browse” and point to the TEMPEXEFOLDER. Then select the “SFEP.inf” file. If you get a warning message regarding driver, select “Install Anyway” and let the installation to continue.
