I had to re-install Windows 7 on our Dell Notebook due to a problem with a Symantec Antivirus but I end up in another issue. Guess what? A driver related issue. So I reinstalled all the common drivers like Display Drivers, Touchpad driver, Sound card driver but was unable to figure out the “Unknown Device” or “Network Controller” device listed in Device Manager.
I noticed that I am unable to connect to Wireless Network from my Notebook. So I thought the issuemay be with my Wireless Network Card driver and I would need this driver to fix the annoying “Unknown Device” or “Network Controller” driver issue.
To find the exact details of this “Unknown Device” or “Network Controller” in Device Manager, I right clicked on it and selected Properties from the list. Then clicked “Details” and then selected Hardware Ids. You will find Hardware IDs of “Unknown Device” or “Network Controller listed over there.
If you are finding any one of the Hardware IDs listed below, then you are lucky because I do have a driver which worked for us and will work for below said Hardware Ids. The Hardware Ids can be any of the following:
These Device IDs belong to Dell Wireless 1500, Dell Wireless 1490, Dell Wireless 1470, Dell Wireless 1450, Dell Wireless 1395, Dell Wireless 1390, Dell Wireless 1370 and Dell Wireless 1350 card. For all above said Wireless Cards, install this Dell Wireless Card Driver (Windows 7) and it should solve the issue (Here is the link http://ftp.dell.com/network/R242438.exe)
You could also try the same driver for Windows 8 and 8.1 based Notebooks. In most cases this Wireless driver has worked for above said Wireless cards.
If you are very specific about each Hardware Ids and corresponding device names, you may refer the table listed below (I have included only the Dell Wireless device names and excluded Dell TrueMobile cards related information. Moreover, I have not added some of the newer Wireless Cards over here).

Let us know whether the driver listed above solved the issue. if not, have you tried to perform Manual Driver update option using Device Manager? which driver worked for you? Let us know what you think so that we can try adding more information if required.
