  1. Ronny says:

    Hi,

Thanks for the information, only problem is the 8.70 version is only available for 32 bit OS version. SBS 2011 and 2008 R2 SP1 are 64 bit OS’es. The 64 bit version of the smart start CD is still 8.60.
Any idea when this will be released?

  2. Dobash says:

The smartstart CD is not working for ML110 G6 server. Any ideas?

    • SiRu says:

For HP 100 series servers, SmartStart CD is not supported. Instead you need to use HP Easy Setup CDs.

At this moment, No new HP Easy Setup CD is available.

      Thanks

      SiRu

      • Hi Siru, as of March 2011 you stated that no HP Easy Setup CD was available for the ML110 G6 for SBS 2011.
It’s now May and I still ca’t find an Easy Setup CD or SmartStart CD for SBS 2011, yet according to the support matrix on HP’s site – all versions of SBS 2011 are suppported.
How can HP claim to support SBS 2011 on the ML110 G6 when there are no assisted install resources available and no drivers or software available for download??
        http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/windows/index.html
According to this list, SBS 2011 is supported on the ML110 G6.
C’mon HP – when are you going to release the updated Easy Setup CD – it’s only been 6 months !

        • SiRu says:

          Hi Graeme Murray,

You are right, no easy setup CD is available at this moment for SBS2011, Just checked the HP link, its not there..

You can use the 2008 R2 drivers as it is compatible with SBS2011.

          Regards

          SiRu

    • I’ve also encountered problems using SmartStart 8.70 CD with the ML110 G6 server trying to install Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2011 Standard.
The HP Easy Setup CD does not have ANY support for Windows SBS 2011.
The SmartStart CD v8.70 does not seem to support the ML110 G6 hardware.
Has anyone found an assisted setup method for the ML110 G6 for SBS 2011?
I could (I’m sure) install SBS 2011 from the DVD or from a USB Stick but I fear I’ll be faced with loads of devices without installed drivers – and there’s no SBS 2011 drivers section for the ML110 G6 server anywhere on the HP sites. I’m guessing I’ll need drivers for Chipset, Audio, Network, Management, iLO, Storage, Graphics and Processors.
Has anyone managed to install SBS 2011 on an ML110 G6? If so, how and where did you get the drivers?

      Graeme.

  3. Roockie says:

    Finally! I looked everywhere … in a month, I have to install SBS 2011 on a ML350 G6.

Why it is not annunced on the HP site??

    Thank you!

    • SiRu says:

It could be because some testing is going on, I am yet to find the same link in HP.com

However, the latest SmartStart CD is working on most of the servers which support Windows 2008 R2. However check whether your server support Windows2011 before you implement it.

      Thanks :D

  4. thomas says:

Does anyone know a way to install SBS 2011 onto a ML110 G6 with raid configured?

    • SiRu says:

Personally, i have not tried, So I am not in a great position to tell you

      • thomas says:

Seems impossible at the moment. Dissapointing that HP do not have a solution when they have known about it for 6+ months. All we can do is goto another manufacturer, HP looses sales.

        • SiRu says:

          Hi,

For ML110 G6 server, we might need to use the Easy Setup CD, but I could not find an Easy Setup CD which supports SBS 2011 listed in HP.com.

Once it is available, I will let you know.

The other way is, use the same driver of Windows 2008 R2 while you install SBS 2011 as both OS (R2 and SBS 2011) are on same (almost) platform. It worked for many.

          Thanks and regards

          SiRu

        • Aaron says:

We have managed to install SBS2011 Standard on a ML110 G6 with Raid Enabled.

Run the SBS 2011 installation DVD.

It will then prompt for driver.

Using the Smart Start CD for x64, extract the ‘hpahcisr’ folder found in e.g. ‘D:\compaq\drivers\w2008r2x64\hpahcisr’

Put the hpahcisr onto a memory stick. Plug this into the server and navigate to the hpahcisr folder and with this it will show an option to select hpahcisr.inf

Click the driver and click next…

You should see the raid hard drive and be able to complete the install.

          • SiRu says:

            Hi Aaron,

Glad to hear that you were able to implement SBS2011 on ML110 G6, if you could get the entire screenshots (may from iLO remote screen), I will post an article here with ur help.

            Thanks again

            SiRu

          • Peter says:

Thanks Aaron! Just reinstalling our test machine on the RAID now.

  5. Bill says:

Do you know whether this version of SmartStart supports NIC-bonding on Red Hat Linux (RHEL5.X)? I appreciate the Windows Server 2003 and 2008 NIC-teaming feature in the Network Configuration Utility. I hope it will also be offered on Red Hat Linux.

    Thanks.

    • SiRu says:

Teaming software Is part of linux and need to do with help of your OS support team.

More info about teaming (bonding) could be found at below said location:

      /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-/Documentation/networking/bonding.txt

More information about teaming is available with redhat support team. Also many websites speaks about it.

  6. Abdulla says:

    Hi,
What is the fastest way to install Blade c class servers.
How to make a smart starter cd bootable.

    • SiRu says:

HP SMartStart CDs are bootable one. You need to download the CD from HP.com and burn the ISO file using any ISO burning software.

I did not understand what do you mean by “fastest way to install blade c class server”?, are you asking how to install a blade in C class Enclosure?

  7. Jason says:

    HI All

Thanks very much for your input on SBS2011 on ML110G6.. I was just about to go through all the headaches that you have been through..

Will make my life alot easier!!

    Supported Environments:

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition (Including R2 & Base Edition)
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 – All Editions
    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Edition

SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (AMD64/EM64T)
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 11 (AMD64/EM64T)

I’ve even verified this by trying to install and being told “Media does not match the selected operating system. Missing:Sources/*R2*SERVERSTANDARDV.clg”.

Interestingly enough, if you check the revision history, it states that 8.70 does support 2008 R2 Sp1, but apparently this is only for the Support Pack.

  9. Robert says:

i`m not happy with the ftp updatefunction in smartstart. because 1. you need to update for each server. 2. seems not to download the newest software/driver available on hp.com

anyone knows a way to have smartstart uptodate and available on a networkshare?

so that you just need to start it to install the latest driver!?

    thx

    • SiRu says:

SmartStart CD 8.7 contains almost all the latest drivers. This will be suffice for your need. :)

HP SIM also have an option to deploy drivers across networks, but I never used/have access to it to explain.

  10. YouZee says:

I am trying to deploy Red hat Enterprise linux 5 on ML110 G6 but keep getting prompts for drivers. Downloaded the easy setup CD but linux OS is not listed.

  11. Scott says:

I am a little baffled. Up until just recently, I would dongle in and install the SmartStart disc then the media from Microsoft. Well, the company has its own branded image now that isn’t an ISO. It is a WIM. SmartStart doesn’t recognize it. When I try to install Server 2008 R2 first from the WIM disc, it will get halfway before it dies because of a lack of drivers. I’m stuck. What should I do?

  12. Dotun says:

    Hello SiRu,

Thanks for the update. I have downloaded the new smart start but I discovered that it has no option for Linux. I had to install windows and then format the Server with RedHat 5.4. Can you please help me out.

    • SiRu says:

SmartSTart CD supports only Assisted installation of WIndows operating SYstem. If you are implementing Linux, you have to manually install Linux and later use the SMartStart CD to install all HP tools.

  13. Donna says:

I need a link to the lastest HP Tools. I have downloaded Smartstart.8.70B but can’t seem to locate HP Tools. I’m setting up a HP DL380 G7 and would like to use HP tools to set it up. Thanks!

    Regards,

  14. Riva Gupta says:

I have an HP Proliant DL380 G7 server. I am using HP SmartStart CD for assisted windows installation. Under the OS selection screen I choose: Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Enterprise x64 Edition and then insert the cd as prompted.

    I get the error:
    Missing: Sources/*_amd64

I have tested the CD with manual installation i.e. installing it separately without SmartStart, I have no problems in that case which means my OS CD is working fine.
    Kindly help me.

    • SiRu says:

Sorry Riva, forgot to reply earlier.

I would recommend you to use the 8.7 version B (version 8.7B) SmartStart CD and see how it goes.

    • Kamal says:

      Hi Riya,

You can try these steps which fixed issue

      1) Boot the Server with OS CD.
      2) when you get “Install Now” screen connect the USB Drive (with the latest Disk controller drivers in it).
      3) Install drivers and before selecting Disk for installation, disconnect the USB Drive.
      4) Start the installation.

      Regards,
      Kamal

    Hey SiRu,

I am trying to do a USB Installation of Windows Home Server 2011… I have a HP DL360 G3 which does not have a dvd rom drive… forcing me to go the USB route. Any suggestions on how to get this done? Thanks in Advance!

    -Larry

    • SiRu says:

If your server does not have any CD/DVD drive, please use the integrated Lightsout of the server (called as iLO). Then use the Remote console and Virtual media. Then you can mount OS CD/DVD or ISO file and do the installation, its much easier than USB.

If this method does not work, please let me know.

  20. Alan says:

None of the ftp link above seem to work.

The directories are missing from the ftp site.

    • SiRu says:

Its working for me now. yesterday there was an issue with HP FTP site and that could be the reason why you were not able to download it.

    Hallo,

I am having some troubles with running the offline ACU on an HP ML370 Server. The only bits I could download (2 different versions) had _x86 appended, and would throw the error “This Kernel requires x86_64 CPU but i686 CPU found, Cannot boot”.
    Don’t know how to proceed.

    Please help

    • SiRu says:

May I know which generation of ML370 Server are you using, if its Generation 1, then probably you wont find any numbers on your server.

Please note: If you are using older servers, latest HP SmartSTart CDs wont work.
      :)

  23. Mike says:

    Hi SiRu,

I am trying to install SBS 2008 64bit standard on a HP DL360 G5. I am trying to do the assisted installation using SmartStart 8.70b. Because the server doesn’t have a DVD drive, i have to try either Network or USB install source.
    i downloaded the media from microsoft (sbs 2008 trial – DVD1_Installation.iso 3.81Gb)

When I try to select usb, it comes up with USB0, when i click on this it just comes up with an empty directory and won’t allow me to continue.
    I
have tried network, i select DHCP, i can see that it takes an IP address that i can ping, but when i specify the network share using my pc’s ip address it comes up with “error: unable to contact network server. please check network settings”.

Any help would be most appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Mike.

    • SiRu says:

HP SmartStart CD x64 is supported by DL360 G5 Server.

Using SmartSTart CD, at Operating System Media Source, you have to selct USB, then select ISO.

I will send the screenshots through email.

NOTE: This server does not natively support SBS 2011 hence I am not sure whether this OS will be supported. However, you may give a try.

      • Mike says:

Thanks for the reply and email, yep that’s the options I selected with the iso image on the usb key (I even used a 64 bit Win7 laptop to put the ISO image on the USB key) it just shows USB0 with an empty directory and it won’t allow me to click next.

I decided not to install 2011 as it’s not supported through smart start, I’ve read about people who say they have installed 2011, but I would prefer to go for reliability at this point.

I was able to get around the issue by configuring iLo and using virtual media to provide the source.

        Thanks,
        Mike.

    • SiRu says:

Hi, You could install Linux OS using SmartStart CD. Assisted installation of Linux OS is not supported by HP SmartStart CD. You have to manually install it :)

      • krishnakant says:

    Hi,

I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 standard on a HP DL360G5, I am using smartstart 8.70B. I get all the way through the setup to the bit where it checks the DVD and it comes up with “this disc does not match the selected operating system. missing: sources/*_amd64″

I selected Retail Wins Server 2008 standard from the list, it seemed like the only option. (I am using genuine retail Server 2008 media)

Any help would be most appreciated.

Also I forgot to mention, I am of course installing the 64bit version. I selected the 64bit version from the smart start CD list of operating systems, and am using the 64bit wins server 2008 DVD.

    • SiRu says:

The only thing which I feel like trying is another Windows media. I have seen this issue in the past when the file copy reaches 27% the media does not get detected.

  29. Dainesek says:

What I ended up doing was to download an ISO image for Server 2008 64bit from Microsoft and burnt that onto a DVD and it worked fine.

Strange how there are 2 DVD’s in the retail pack and the one I used clearly says 64bit. But it doesn’t have the sources/*_amd64 folder on it…

Thanks for your reply, all good now :)

  30. Larry says:

I am getting the same with the Smartstart reaching 27% and not detecting the volume license copy. When I install with just the CD, it looks for the CD/DVD Drivers like others have had. Funny though, before I tried to use Smartstart on one system, the media installed without Smartstart. After trying to redo it after I had problems with another system, I started getting the same errors.

    • SiRu says:

Do you have another Windows media to try with?

Delete the logical drives from ACU/ORCA and re-create the RAID before you attempting again.

Use the System Erase option in the SmartAStart CD Homepage to delete all and start over.. Then restart server, re-create new RAID on server.

      It may help you

      Cheers

DL165 G5 does not really support the SmartStart CD. By the way, which storage controller do you use on your Server? If you are using HP Embedded SATA controller, then you need to follow the steps provided in this link

Its running the latest BIOS I can find (A05) the issue is I need it to run 2008 for some apps that don’t support 2012 yet.

Any ideas what may be the issue ? I have tried different media, including the latest 2K8 R2 SP1 image.
